Team USA’s Steven Lopez goes for a fourth straight Olympic medal in taekwondo on Friday in Rio. The women’s 67kg and men’s 80kg welterweights are competing, with Lopez one of the favorites in latter. On the women’s side, fellow American Paige McPherson will be looking to add to the U.S. medal total as well.

Three-time Olympic medalist Steven Lopez competes Friday in men’s 80kg taekwondo.

Lopez, a three-time Olympic medalist (gold in 2000 and 2004, bronze in 2008) and five-time world champion, is looking to further prove himself as one of the greatest taekwondo competitors of all-time with another big win in Rio. Lopez fights in the first men’s Round of 16 match of the day against Russia’s Albert Gaun.
Matches begin early with the Round of 16 starting at 8 a.m. ET for women and 8:15 a.m. ET for the men. Eliminations then continue throughout the day with quarterfinals, semifinals and repechage matches before the bronze and gold medal matches are fought in the evening.
In the women’s 67kg, defending Olympic bronze medalist McPherson will look to repeat or improve upon her showing from London this year. McPherson finished third at the Olympics in 2012 and at the World Championships in 2015. She opens with a Round of 16 match against Azerbaijan’s Farida Azizova that’s set to begin at 10:30 a.m. ET.
The two-time defending Olympic champion at 67kg, South Korea’s Hwang Kyung-seon, isn’t participating this year, so McPherson may have her best chance yet at going for gold.
