Spain and Australia play for the bronze on Sunday morning in Rio.

It’s been an unpredictable trip to Rio for Spain, which entered as one of the favorites to the U.S. The team proved that true with a close semifinal loss to the Americans, but only after some early stumbles. Spain lost its first two games to Brazil and Croatia, then rolled off four straight wins — including a 25-point beatdown of longtime rival France in the quarterfinals — to meet the U.S. in the semifinals.
For the third straight Olympics, the U.S. took down Spain. The past two times it came in the gold medal game, so the Spaniards at least came away with silver medals. This time around, they were on the same side of the bracket and met in the semis. Now if Spain wants to come away from Rio with a medal, they will need to beat Australia on Sunday morning.
The good news for Spain is that Australia is coming off a brutal performance. The Boomers seemed like one of the most dangerous teams this year after going 4-1 in the group stage, with only a close loss to Team USA, then crushing Lithuania in the quarterfinals. A disastrous semifinal performance saw Australia score just 14 first-half points en route to a 87-61 loss to Serbia, though, and now the Aussies will need to group if they’re going to win their first ever Olympic medal.
