Matt Moore just misses no-hitter as Giants salvage game with Dodgers

Moore came within one out of the first Giants’ no-hitter against the Dodgers in 101 years.

The San Francisco Giants acquired Matt Moore to help fend off the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West, and on Thursday night the left-hander did just that, coming within one out of a no-hitter in a 4-0 win for San Francisco at Dodger Stadium.

Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager blooped a single into right field with two outs in the ninth inning, ending the no-hit bit and ending Moore's night at 133 pitches, the most thrown by any pitcher in MLB in 2016.

The much-needed win for San Francisco prevented a three-game sweep by the Dodgers, and snapped a four-game losing streak. The Giants are now two games back of Los Angeles in the division wih 35 games remaining in the regular season.

Moore lost three of his first four starts with the Giants after he was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays on Aug. 1. But on Thursday, all he allowed were three walks, two to Yasmani Grandal and one to Seager, retiring 14 straight at one point.

The closest he came to allowing a hit in the first eight innings was a drive by Kiké Hernandez to lead off the ninth, but center fielder Denard Span made a sliding catch in the left center field gap to help preserve history.

Moore struck out seven in the win.

The last Giants pitcher to throw a no-hitter against the Dodgers was Rube Marquard of the New York Giants no-hit the Brooklyn Dodgers at the Polo Grounds on April 15, 1915.
