Plus, tons of news bits from a busy few days around the NHL.

Lace ‘em up. Time for the Morning Skate.
A SAVARD CHECK-IN
It’s been five years since a Matt Cooke elbow to the head ended Marc Savard’s career early. SB Nation’s Scott Wheeler spoke to the former Bruins center to find out how he’s doing these days. As it turns out, life after hockey is still a tough road.
HE WENT TO JARED
And by he, I mean Joe Sakic. Colorado didn’t take long to fill Patrick Roy’s vacated coaching spot. Last week, the Avs hired Jared Bednar as the franchise’s seventh head coach. Bednar spent last season leading the AHL’s Lake Erie Monsters to the Calder Cup. The focus now turns to the players in Colorado to perform, though Avs fans are impressed with what Bednar brings to the table.
