Team USA begins play in the group stage with a matchup against China on Saturday.
The U.S. and China played a pair of exhibition games in California recently, neither of which were close. In the first game at Staples Center, Team USA allowed just 18 points in the second half en route to a 106-57 win. The Americans shot 55 percent to China’s 31 percent, forced 26 turnovers and out-rebounded their opponents 39-26.
The next game, this time at Oracle Arena, was almost an identical result with Team USA winning, 107-57. The shooting was a bit more even in the second exhibition, but DeMarcus Cousins led the U.S. to a 48-21 advantage on the boards, and the team hit 14 three-pointers.
That was the ongoing trend for all of Team USA’s warmup games, as they consistently dominated competition from start to finish. It’s built up high expectations for the team entering Rio, where a “gold or bust” attitude is pervasive given the team’s talent advantage.
Winning gold starts with winning the group stage, and that effort begins Saturday. The U.S. shouldn’t have too much trouble given the way it outplayed China recently, but it’ll still be fun to tune in and see just how things play out. At the very least, there should be some nice highlights to catch live.
