Olympic medal count 2016: Australia still on top in golds, United States tied for overall lead

Australia remains the leader in gold medals after Catherine Skinner’s victory in women’s trap shooting on Sunday.

Australia remains atop the 2016 Olympic medal count with three golds midway through action on Sunday. China, South Korea, Hungary and Italy are right behind the Australians with two gold medals apiece, while the United States is one of several teams with one gold.

In overall medal count, the Americans are faring a bit better with seven, which is tied for the most in Rio with Italy, China and Japan. Australia, South Korea and Russia each have five, while no other country has more than two.

China earned its first two gold medals Sunday. The first came in the women’s 10-meter air pistol, which was won by Zhang Mengxue, while the second came in women’s diving. Wu Minxia and Shi Tingmao won the gold in the synchronized 3-meter springboard in Rio. The former now has the most diving gold medals of any Olympian in history, although teammate Chen Ruolin could tie her if she wins gold in the women’s synchronized 10-meter platform event on Tuesday.

Catherine Skinner earned Australia’s third gold in Rio by taking the top spot in women’s trap shooting.

In judo, Kosovo’s Majlinda Kelmendi won the gold in the women’s 52kg weight class and Italy’s Fabio Basile won in the men’s 66kg weight class. Kelmendi is the first athlete representing independent Kosovo to win an Olympic medal, so it’s a historic day in Rio. Basile, meanwhile, gave Italy its second gold medal in what’s been a solid start to this year’s games for the country.
