Swedish swimmer Sarah Sjostrom won the gold medal in the women’s 100-meter individual butterfly on Sunday night in Rio. She also broke her own world record in the process with a time of 55.48 seconds. The silver went to Canadian Penny Oleksiak, while American and 2012 Olympic gold medal winner Dana Vollmer took the bronze.

Sjöström had never won an Olympic medal before, but she entered this race as a favorite. After finishing fourth at the 2012 Olympics in London, she’s since established herself as one of the premier swimmers in this event.

Sjöström finished first in the semifinals on Friday night with a then-Olympic record time of 55.84 seconds. She is the reigning world champion after setting the world record of 55.64 seconds at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships in Russia. The Swedish swimmer broke the mark of 55.98 seconds set by Vollmer at the 2012 Olympics in London.

Vollmer qualified for the final by finishing fourth in the semifinals with a time of 57.06 seconds. The 28-year-old was the only American to earn a spot after her teammate, Kelsi Worrell, narrowly missed taking the eighth and final opening by finishing ninth in the semis.

It’s been an interesting road to Rio for Vollmer, who gave birth to her son in March 2015. Returning to elite athletic performance after that has been a process, and in winning a medal Sunday night, she’s become the first American Olympic swimmer in history to do so after giving birth. She’s spoke about being surprised to even compete in Rio, so her performance is a truly incredible feat.
