Travis Stevens goes for his first Olympic medal in Rio.

Only one American judoka, Travis Stevens, will be competing Thursday. A two-time Olympian who is finally looking to break through and win a medal, Stevens is hot coming off a gold medal at the 2015 Pan American Games and a bronze medal at the 2015 Pan American Championships. Now he’ll look to carry over that success in Rio, where he’s competing in the same 81kg weight class he’s always worked in.
In the past two Olympics, Stevens lost matches to German judoka Ole Bischof, who won gold in Beijing and silver in London. Bischof is retired now, however, which could open up a bigger opportunity for Stevens to finally claim an Olympic medal. The 30-year-old finished ninth in 2008 and fifth in 2012.
