Michael Phelps Wins Angryface Gold!

It’s one of the newer Olympic events, but equally worthy of celebration.Watch on YouTube | Subscribe to SB Nation on YouTube

Move over Unimpressed McKayla Maroney! We’re provisionally awarding the gold medal for Greatest Meme of the 2016 Olympic Games!

Prior to the Men’s 200m Butterfly preliminaries on Monday night, NBC cameras caught Michael Phelps mean muggin’ his rival Chad le Clos in the green room as they waited to race. At the 2012 London Games, the South African took gold over Phelps, besting him by just .05 seconds, or “roughly the amount of time it takes you to realize you’re locking your keys in the car as you close the door.” Phelps had entered the race as both the two-time defending Olympic champion and the world record holder. With nine gold medals in the event across all major swimming championships, including gold in Athens and Beijing, the 200m butterfly was considered Phelps’ signature event, so that silver to le Clos stuck with him

Though Phelps came in second at Monday night’s prelims, he did finish ahead of le Clos (who took 3rd) and is the Twitter leader in the club house. Meme dreams are made of these... or should we say nightmares?!? Let’s hope Tuesday night’s finals give us more viral content that will break the internet.
