Olympic medal count 2016: United States still on top in golds and overall total

The U.S. remains on top of the medal count midway through Day 4 in Rio.

The United States won its 20th medal at the 2016 Olympics on Tuesday afternoon in the equestrian individual eventing competition. The country presently has seven more medals than any other team so far in Rio. The Americans are also tied for the lead in golds with five.

Phillip Dutton, riding on a horse named Mighty Nice, won the bronze medal in equestrian individual eventing Tuesday to add to Team USA’s total. He finished behind Germany’s Michael Jung and France’s Astier Nicolas, who won the gold and silver, respectively.

It’s the fourth time in the past five Olympics that the U.S. has won a medal in this competition. Americans won gold in 2000 and silver in 2004 and 2008, but failed to earn a spot on the podium in 2012. Jung also won the gold medal in this event four years ago.

The U.S. now has 20 medals, which is easily tops in Rio. China is in second with 13, while Japan and Russia each have 10. In the gold medal count, the U.S. and China are tied with five apiece while Australia has four and Italy, Japan and Hungary each have three.

Here’s a look at the full updated medal count for the 2016 Olympics midway through action Tuesday.
