Bills place Sammy Watkins on injured reserve

The Bills offense is last in the NFL in passing yards and is now without its most dangerous receiving threat.

Continued problems with recovery from a fractured foot sent Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins to the injured reserve on Friday, the team announced.

Watkins, 23, suffered the injury in May, but it wasn’t considered serious or even something that would cost him time in training camp. However, the receiver struggled to return from it and missed Week 3 when it was re-injured.

Prior to missing the game, Watkins was confident that the recovery was coming along and assured reporters that he wouldn’t miss any time.

“That’s kind of out the window,” Watkins said. “I know what I’m doing with it. The team knows what I’m dealing with. It’s up to me to go out there and play. If I’m out there playing I can’t feel sorry for myself. The foot is not an excuse or issue.”

In the first two weeks of the season, Watkins struggled to contribute like his usual self, tallying just six receptions for 63 yards.

It’s a big blow to the Buffalo offense, which already has the fewest passing yards in the NFL after three weeks. Replacing Watkins on the roster is Justin Hunter, a 2013 second-round pick of the Tennessee Titans with just 68 receptions entering his fourth NFL season.
