Royal Rumble 2017 results: Randy Orton wins 2nd Rumble of his career

The Viper is heading to WrestleMania 33 after winning the Rumble.

Randy Orton is a two-time Royal Rumble winner after being the last man standing in WWE’s 30-man battle royale. He’ll head to a title shot at WrestleMania 33, though the title he’s challenging for is up in the air with the brand split back.

It will also be intriguing to see how Orton’s win affects his status within the Wyatt Family, a stable he’s been a big part of in recent months.

The Rumble had a bunch of smaller storylines going on, beyond the drama of whoever would win. There’s a lot to unpack here, so let’s go over the match entry by entry.

No. 1 entry: Big Cass

Cass makes his Royal Rumble debut from the first spot. He and Enzo Amore serenaded the crowd with their trademark catchphrases before the next entry came out.

No. 2 entry: Chris Jericho

The United States champion is in the Rumble for a 10th time. Cass and Jericho got the action started, and Cass used his size advantage to get the early jump on Y2J. Jericho went over the top rope but stayed alive on the apron.

No. 3 entry: Kalisto

Kalisto made some noise with his unique lucha style.

No. 4 entry: Mojo Rawley

Yet another Rumble debutante. Rawley is working solo since his Hype Bros partner, Zack Ryder, is on the shelf with a knee injury. Rawley went to work on Cass, teaming up with Jericho to try eliminating the bigger man. They didn’t succeed.

No. 5 entry: Jack Gallagher

We have our first surprise entry, with the 205 Live cruiserweight making his Rumble debut. Gallagher came to the ring with his signature umbrella, William III. He used it to low-blow Jericho and put on a delightful display.

No. 6 entry: Mark Henry

The World’s Strongest Man makes his ninth Rumble appearance. Henry threw Gallagher between the ropes, but did not eliminate him. Gallagher came back in and tried to dive on Henry, but he got quickly eliminated afterwards.

No. 7 entry: Braun Strowman

Fresh off costing Roman Reigns his title shot, Strowman enters the Rumble for the second time in his career. He quickly went to work, throwing out Rawley, Big Cass, and Kalisto in short order. Strowman and Henry then went into a big guy standoff, before Strowman cleared the ring by eliminating Henry. Jericho slid under the ropes and out of the ring to avoid elimination.

No. 8 entry: Sami Zayn

Zayn and Strowman have previous bad blood, so of course they enter the Rumble back-to-back. Zayn put up a valiant fight, but Strowman had the clear advantage throughout their one-on-one battle.

No. 9 entry: Big Show

Now we’re getting a classic HOSS OFF between Braun and Big Show, two mountains of beef. Show managed to get up Strowman for a chokeslam, at which point Jericho went back in the ring and walked into a KO punch. Strowman managed to get the upper hand and shoved Show over the top rope for the elimination.

No. 10 entry: Tye Dillinger

The Perfect Ten appropriately enters the Rumble at No. 10. He even went right after Strowman with Zayn’s help.

No. 11 entry: James Ellsworth

This chinless geek somehow got into the Rumble, but he was reluctant to enter the ring with Strowman looming. Zayn and Dillinger used the distraction to nearly eliminate Braun, but he got back in and returned to dominating.

No. 12 entry: Dean Ambrose

Business picks up with the Lunatic Fringe and Intercontinental champion entering the fray. He goaded Ellsworth into entering the ring, only for Strowman to immediately throw him out. Ambrose got in and the smaller heroes ganged up on Strowman before getting put on the mat again.

No. 13 entry: Baron Corbin

Corbin makes his Rumble debut here. Strowman eliminated Dillinger before taking more offenses from the other players in the ring. Zayn hit the Helluva Kick on Strowman and Corbin clotheslined him out of the ring, eliminating the biggest threat so far.

No. 14 entry: Kofi Kingston

Kofi is the first New Day member to enter the Rumble. With Strowman out, Corbin took his place as the biggest man in the match.

No. 15 entry: The Miz

With Maryse by his side, Miz makes his 10th Rumble entry. He immediately hit Skull Crushing Finale on Zayn before going after Ambrose, the man who beat him for his IC title. Corbin caught Miz with the Deep Six and shrugged off a choke attempt by Kingston.

Kingston made his annual Rumble save, getting knocked over the turnbuckle but hanging onto the post.

No. 16 entry: Sheamus

The 2012 Rumble winner appears here after losing his tag titles on the pre-show. He and Miz mixed it up for a while.

No. 17 entry: Big E

Kingston is joined by his New Day teammate, who double-teamed Miz and nearly eliminated him. Zayn and Ambrose teased eliminations on the near side of the ring.

No. 18 entry: Rusev

Handsome Rusev makes his third Rumble appearance, wearing a face guard after busting his nose on Raw last week. The ring really started to fill up at this point, with no notable eliminations in a while.

No. 19 entry: Cesaro

Cesaro gets to join Sheamus, his tag partner, in the Rumble. The Swiss Superman spun around Zayn, Ambrose, Kingston, Big E, and even Corbin. He then tried to swing Sheamus, before Rusev dropped him with a kick to the head.

No. 20 entry: Xavier Woods

Now the New Day are completely united in the Rumble. Big E hit a Big Splash on Sheamus and the New Day triple-teamed Miz for a bit.

No. 21 entry: Bray Wyatt

The leader of the Wyatt Family is having problems within his clan, but he’s the first member of the family to enter the Rumble. He went after Xavier Woods, who was terrorized by the Wyatts in the summer of 2016, and almost eliminated him.

No. 22 entry: Apollo Crews

The former Uhaa Nation makes his first Rumble appearance, but he was quickly overshadowed by Sheamus, who eliminated the entire New Day by himself before getting thrown out alongside Cesaro. The two rivals and reluctant allies confronted each other afterwards.

No. 23 entry: Randy Orton

The newest member of the Wyatt Family, Orton hit an RKO on Corbin and Rusev, before countering a Zayn splash with another RKO. Orton and Wyatt then started working together to take control of the match.

No. 24 entry: Dolph Ziggler

The newly villainous Ziggler went right for the superkicks to lay out opponents.

No. 25 entry: Luke Harper

Harper enters to the Wyatt Family’s music despite being attacked by Bray on last week’s SmackDown episode. He eliminated Crews and had a staredown with Wyatt and Orton, before laying them out with clotheslines. Harper almost hit Wyatt with his own finishing move, before Orton laid him out with an RKO.

No. 26 entry: Brock Lesnar

The Beast Incarnate is here to raise hell after his embarrassing loss to Goldberg at Survivor Series. He eliminates Ambrose and Ziggler before suplexing everybody left in the ring.

No. 27 entry: Enzo Amore

Big Cass’s long-gone partner appears here, but Lesnar made quick work of him and eliminated him.

No. 28 entry: Goldberg

This is the showdown everyone’s been waiting for — Goldberg vs. Lesnar. They finally face down in the Rumble, but it mostly ended like it did at Survivor Series, with Goldberg immediately spearing Lesnar and throwing him out for another stunning defeat. Goldberg then hit a Jackhammer on Zayn before the Wyatt Family ganged up on him.

No. 29 entry: The Undertaker

As expected, the crowd went nuclear upon hearing Undertaker’s gong music. Taker teleported to the ring without appearing on the ramp, staring down Goldberg before Corbin and Rusev broke it up. Goldberg eliminated Rusev and Taker threw out Corbin. When Goldberg tossed Harper, Taker took advantage and eliminated him.

No. 30 entry: Roman Reigns

The last man in the Rumble is also the 2015 winner. Reigns entered to a chorus of boos and started throwing hands with Undertaker. The Dead Man eliminated Miz and Zayn, before Reigns threw him out. They had a long staredown, clearly setting up something at WrestleMania 33.

Reigns eliminated Jericho, leaving the final three down to Reigns, Wyatt, and Orton. The Wyatt members double-teamed Reigns, but Roman threw out Wyatt. Orton then hit an RKO on Reigns and eliminated him, winning the Royal Rumble for the second time in his career.
