NFL protests are set to continue in Week 6 of the NFL season. Earlier in the week, it was reported that NFL owners would be meeting in New York to discuss implementing a rule to require players to stand for the national anthem.

In a since-deleted tweet, Tennessee Titans wide receiver Rishard Matthews said that if such a rule were passed, he would be done with football. He later apologized for the tweet and told Paul Kuharsky, “I know the owners have got a meeting next weekend, so hopefully it won’t get to that.” The NFLPA will be represented at the meeting, and some players are expected to be there as well.

Last week, Vice President Mike Pence left the Colts game after 49ers players kneeled, and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that players who “disrespect the flag” won’t play.

The focus of the demonstrations during the national anthem has shifted ever since President Donald Trump made remarks in Alabama, saying that any player who kneels is a “son of a bitch” who should be fired.

It caused a wave of new demonstrations, some of which took away from the focus of Colin Kaepernick’s protest — which was against police brutality and oppression against people of color.

Some players have linked arms in “unity” before the anthem, and some haven’t showed up for the anthem at all. Either way, it’s created a discussion that Trump has plastered himself in the middle of.
