Andy Reid cost the Chiefs much-needed points on a failed 4th-and-goal attempt

A field goal would have made it a six-point game.

The Chiefs offense finally got going in the third quarter with a 10-play, 86-yard drive. A field goal would have narrowed the Steelers’ lead to just six points, but Andy Reid elected to go for it on fourth-and-2 instead.

It didn’t work. Alex Smith’s pass was ruled incomplete.

The Steelers only sent three rushers, leaving the Chiefs receivers in man coverage. Tight end Demetrius Harris might not have been the best option, as he was in triple coverage. There were other options singled up.

Kicking a chip shot field goal and taking three points would have made it a one-score game. The Chiefs offense had almost no signs of life until this drive, but even though the Steelers have effectively shut Kansas City down, this game is still within reach.

On the other hand, you can make the case that the Chiefs were right to go for it there. The offense had been bottled up all day, and the odds of another long scoring drive would’ve seemed slim at that point.

The Chiefs did manage to get into the end zone on their next possession. Smith connected with De’Anthony Thomas for a 57-yard touchdown. And if Reid had taken the points earlier, Kansas City would have a lead.
