Jenny Boucek becomes the third female coach to join NBA coaching ranks

The NBA is the most progressive sports league in the world, and that trend is continuing today.

The Kings have added Jenny Boucek to their coaching staff as an assistant player development coach, continuing the trend of teams adding women to their coaching staff around the league.

Boucek has 18 years of coaching experience from her time in the WNBA and won two championships from her time as an assistant coach with the Seattle Storm. Most recently, from 2015 to 2017, Boucek was the head coach of the Storm.

Boucek joining David Joeger’s staff in Sacramento is just another step forward for progression in the NBA and another step toward one day having a female head coach in the NBA’s ranks.

Boucek now becomes the second active female assistant coach in the league alongside Becky Hammon in San Antonio under Gregg Popovich. She’s the third woman to coach in the league’s ranks throughout it’s history. Nancy Liberman was an assistant coach under George Karl in Sacramento before taking a leave from the team for family reasons.

Having representation anywhere is important and this is just another step forward for the NBA. Lower level coaching jobs are stepping stones for future head coaching jobs in sports.

However, none of this matters if the league stops here. Boucek is opening doors for future opportunities for women in sports, but she also needs to have more opportunities for her own career in the future. If the league continues on the same track it’s currently on, she will.
