Carson Palmer exited the Cardinals’ game against the Rams on Sunday after he broke his left arm. The team placed Palmer on injured reserve on Thursday.

Palmer had surgery Wednesday and will miss at least eight weeks. The earliest he can return is on Dec. 24 against the Giants.

Backup Drew Stanton will take over at quarterback for Arizona.

What happened Sunday? Palmer left the game with his team down 13-0. Stanton has been with the team since 2014, and has made nine starts since then. He’s 6-3 in those starts, and while he’s not going to be the quarterback you’d love to have as your backup, he’s shown he can do just enough to get things done.

The Cardinals’ offense got a boost last week after trading for Adrian Peterson, and they’ll need him to have a similar performance the rest of the game, especially if Palmer is going to be absent.

The Cardinals were shut out by the Rams, 33-0. Stanton completed just 5 of 14 catches for 66 yards and also threw a pick.

What happens next? The team also has Blaine Gabbert on the roster, though coach Bruce Arians said he planned to stick with Stanton.

Before his injury, Palmer completed 61.4 of his passes for 1,978 yards, nine touchdowns, and seven interceptions. There’s not exactly a high bar for Stanton to live up to in his place, but he’ll have to play better than he did Sunday if the 3-4 Cardinals can turn things around.
