With his team up 25 and nothing to lose, Bell rejected Dwight Powell’s three-point attempt, then darted up court. What happened next was one of the most disrespectful things that the NBA has seen so far this year.
The rookie Bell looked over to see how close Gian Clavell was to him before throwing the ball off the glass and stuffing in with two hands.

That was probably the same reaction both Steve Kerr and Rick Carlisle had watching from the sidelines.
A play like that is the NBA equivalent of running the score up in a college football game when you’re ahead 49 on a non-ranked opponent. In fact, Kerr tried to apologize to Carlisle for his rookie’s behavior. According to The Athletic’s Anthony Slater, the Mavs’ coach wanted no part.
Of course, there wasn’t any malice behind Bell’s show-stopping jam. He’s 22 years old just trying to make a name for himself on a stacked Warriors team. Sure ,it may have been at the expense of a young, less talented Mavericks squad — and it was on Dallas’ home floor — but it was a moment most people enjoyed.
That’s why Kerr dismissed Bell’s self-oop as “a young kid just having fun,” according to The San Francisco Chronicle’s Connor Letourneau. It was just a dunk. Nothing more, nothing less.
Still, any time you leave the reigning NBA Finals MVP speechless, you’ve done something good.
