Kicker Roberto Aguayo will get another chance in the NFL. The Panthers signed the former second-round pick to their practice squad, the team announced on Wednesday.
Roberto Aguayo gets 2nd chance with Panthers. Please let him kick against the Bucs
The Panthers decided to take a flier on the sophomore kicker, who could face his old team this week.

Panthers kicker Graham Gano was on the team’s injury report last week with knee soreness, but was able to play this past Sunday against the Bears, getting the team’s only three points. However, in dealing with the injury, the Panthers wanted some insurance, and liked what they saw from Aguayo after working him out on Tuesday.
Aguayo was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ second-round pick in 2016. He didn’t have many bright spots with Tampa Bay, but his greatest moment actually came against the Panthers — a Monday Night Football game-winner.
This upcoming week, the Panthers will be taking on the Buccaneers in Tampa. The odds of Aguayo playing don’t necessarily seem high, but it would be something to watch for if he were to take on his former team on the road.
Dare we say — even kick a game-winner.
But Aguayo has been inconsistent throughout his career. After connecting on all four of his field goal attempts in a 2016 Week 11 victory against the Kansas City Chiefs, Aguayo took home the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week award. However, he only completed 71 percent of his field goal attempts in 2016.
He tried to redeem himself in the 2017 preseason, but still struggled on the field. After missing a field goal and an extra point in the Buccaneers’ preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Tampa Bay cut the sophomore kicker. Aguayo was competing with Nick Folk to make the team, but his performance destroyed his chances of staying in Tampa Bay, where Folk ultimately took over. Now, Patrick Murray has Folk’s job.
Nobody ever wants to see a player injured enough to where they can’t play. However, if Gano is unable to go on Sunday, the storylines for Sunday’s game get a lot more interesting, even if it is between kickers.
