Charlotte Hornets rookie Malik Monk has had some good moments through his first five career games, but this was not one of them. After coming out of Kentucky last year, Monk thought he could try a self alley-oop, a la Tracy McGrady, when he got stuck on an offensive possession. Maybe that would work in college. It did not work here.
Hornets’ Malik Monk tries self alley-oop that Aaron Gordon mercilessly swats away
It’s a highlight play, but not in the way Monk envisioned.

Aaron Gordon’s total destruction of this play is just sensational. He times it easily and obliterates the shot attempt. Honestly, it could have gone even worse for Monk if Gordon really wanted it to.
The cameras found Nicolas Batum on the bench, and his reaction to his teammate’s overly confident attempt here sums it up.
Monk has learned an important lesson about the NBA today.
