Seahawks fans caused a spike in seismic activity after game-winning TD vs. Texans

You can’t blame the 12th Man for being excited enough to shake the stadium.

The Seahawks were trailing the Texans 38-34 with 21 seconds left to play. Russell Wilson hit Jimmy Graham with the game-winning touchdown, and the home crowd went wild.

As a matter of fact, their excitement shook the stadium so much that it caused a spike in seismic activity.

Graham was wide open for the 18-yard pass.

It’s not the first time seismologists have picked up on increased activity at Century Link Field. Marshawn Lynch’s famous Beast Quake run against the Saints had the same effect.

Our Matt Ufford spoke to John Vidale, a professor at the University of Washington and the director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, who confirmed it.

”It would probably be the energy of a magnitude-one earthquake; even though the motion was kind of small, it lasted a long time,” Vidale said.

The reaction to Graham’s game-winning touchdown probably wasn’t quite that dramatic. But it was enough to show up as seismic activity.

The Seahawks won 41-38, but there were nine lead changes in this scoring frenzy. It was one of the best games of the 2017 season so far, and it’s perfectly understandable that fans were excited enough to cause a tiny earthquake.
