Myles Garrett hints he’ll make his NFL debut against the Jets

Cleveland Browns rookie defensive end Myles Garrett will finally make his much-anticipated regular season debut against the Jets in Week 5. Unfortunately, it may be too late for him to affect the Browns’ playoff fortunes.

Garrett tweeted the following on Wednesday, which translates from Spanish to English as “I am back”:

What happened? This year’s No. 1 overall pick suffered a high ankle sprain during a practice on Sept. 6. A teammate accidentally fell on his ankle, and Garrett was expected to miss 4-6 weeks. He spent the last few weeks in a walking boot.

Two weeks ago, Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot reported that Garrett ditched the walking boot and rode a stationary bike. Head coach Hue Jackson said Garrett was “close” to returning to the field, but the team decided to hold him out against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 3. Garrett believes he can make a difference once he steps on the field.

Garrett finally returned to practice on Thursday before the team’s Week 4 in-state showdown with the Bengals:

Jackson told ESPN’s Pat McManamon that Garrett “looked good” in practice. “I think we’re getting closer, like I said before, than we are further away,” Jackson said.

“I want to make sure that we cross all the t’s and dot all the i’s and talk to the medical staff about what the expectation is of him and what we’re going to do. He’s a huge piece of our organization, our future, so we want to be cautious but smart as we go through it.”

After the evaluations, the Browns decided that Garrett was not yet ready for regular season action. Instead, Cleveland held their prized prospect out another week.

What does this mean for the Browns? The 0-4 Browns need all the help they can get. This defensive unit has only accumulated nine sacks in four games, all losses of varying embarrassment. Coming out of Texas A&M, Garrett was known as a pass-rushing specialist, totaling 31 sacks and seven forced fumbles during his three-year stint in college. While he’s raw, his ridiculous athletic talent should help him make an immediate impact in the NFL. Cleveland needs his pass-rushing skills and high motor to help this front seven.
