Kyle Schwarber is a hulking beef man like few beef men before him. When he hits home runs, they are punishing and majestic, and we are lucky to be able to watch him.

He’s not much of an outfielder, though. And in Game 3 of the 2017 NLDS, his defensive foibles took the spotlight. Schwarber committed two errors on the same play, and it was impressive.
Instead of ending the inning, Schwarber allowed Daniel Murphy to scoot into third base with two outs. Jose Quintana — who was rolling, but close to 100 pitches — was removed in favor of Pedro Strop.
Ryan Zimmerman made the Cubs pay, though, roping a 1-1 pitch into the gap for a double and driving in the game’s first run. Quintana was not charged with an earned run. If there’s any justice, Schwarber will be.
There are still a few innings left, and we might see a beefy home run from Schwarber yet. For now, though, he’s now known for his contributions in this National League Division Series. That’s not a good thing.
