Even though the 2017 season has only just ended, it’s never too soon to start counting the days until Opening Day of 2018. By the looks of it, the National League’s premier power hitter is more-than-likely going to be wearing a different uniform by the time of Opening Day of 2018. The new ownership in Miami has made no secret of the fact that they’re planning to cut payroll in a major way and one of the best ways to do that is to move Giancarlo Stanton and his massive contract onto another team who will gladly welcome him with open arms.

Jon Morosi of MLB.com is reporting that the Marlins are not waiting until the winter meetings and have already decided to light the hot stove aflame in the early stages of the offseason by talking to a handful of teams when it comes to trading Stanton. The first few teams involved in talks are reportedly the Cardinals, Giants, Phillies, and Red Sox. It’s not really a huge shock to see those four teams involved in the early stages of the Stanton Sweepstakes. After all, they’re all teams who have relatively deep pockets and high expectations.

Listen, we know it’s tough to catch up on everything happening in the baseball world each morning. Trying to find all of it while on your way to work or sitting at your desk just isn’t easy. It’s OK, though. Subscribe to our daily MLB newsletter and let us do the heavy lifting for you each morning to find the things you need to see.

Plus, the arrival of Stanton would be a game-changer for each team. Morosi believes that St. Louis would be the best fit for Stanton, while the Giants could be looking at a potential bounce-back season with Stanton in tow for 2018. The Phillies’ rebuild would receive a huge jump-start if they traded for last year’s leader in home runs, and the Red Sox would receive a sorely-needed boost of power if they were able to pull off the deal.

At the moment, it makes sense for all four of these teams to pursue Stanton as they have the financial resources and other assets necessary to land him. However, the most important aspect of any potential trade for Stanton appears to be the recruiting pitch. Stanton has a full no-trade clause in his contract, so it may come down to which team ends up being the most attractive to Stanton. Either way, the bidding war for Stanton will add another intriguing spark to the flame that will heat this year’s Hot Stove.

  • Shohei Otani’s impending arrival has already ensured that this will be an interesting offseason and Grant Brisbee has a few predictions that could change things from “interesting” to “controversial.”
  • Byron Buxton was named as the Defensive Player of the Year for 2017, so here’s a video of the dynamic defender making a diving catch to end a game in victory for the Twins.
  • Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports got together with his trusted expert to try to predict just how much the top 80 free agents will each get with new contracts this offseason.
  • As you take a look at that list of free agents, the crew over at Camden Chat believes that the Orioles should look at that list and decide to go for it in 2018.
