Houston’s George Springer dominated the Dodgers with five home runs in seven games to win World Series MVP. It’s pretty awesome for Astros fans who’ve watched him grow in their system, and it’s doubly awesome for kids who stutter.
The Astros’ George Springer is World Series MVP and an inspiration to kids who stutter
Springer is a spokesperson for SAY and an outspoken advocate in interviews. And he hit five homers!
Springer stutters. He has since he was a kid, and in his school days, it was something he tried to hide — not raising his hand in class, avoiding college courses that required presentations, and relying on family members to pronounce tricky orders for him at restaurants.
It dawned on Springer as an adult that, as a public figure, he could be a role model for kids experiencing what he experienced. He vowed to speak without hesitation; to let the world hear him talk and to get people with and without communication disorders more comfortable with open stuttering. Springer’s interviews and his relationship with the Stuttering Association for the Young make good on that vow.
