Baseball’s Hot Stove season is far from lit right now

Sunday’s Say Hey, Baseball is trying to figure out how to get the Hot Stove fired up since it’s anything but hot at the moment.

While the hot stove may have done a good job of warming up whatever food you may have consumed over this holiday weekend, it hasn’t exactly done a good job of heating up any potential rumors about free agency and trades.

We haven’t seen anything close to resembling a blockbuster trade happen so far, and we also haven’t seen any of the big free agent dominoes fall. Granted, there’s still ages to go until pitchers and catchers report to their sunny getaways at the tail end of winter, but for now we’re off to a painfully slow start when it comes to the rumor mill.

The only bit of big news to break this weekend was solely centered around the impending arrival of Japanese dual-threat Shohei Ohtani. The latest on him is that CAA Sports reportedly sent out a memo that hoped to give teams an idea of how to lay out their recruiting pitch for their client Ohtani.

Listen, we know it’s tough to catch up on everything happening in the baseball world each morning. Trying to find all of it while on your way to work or sitting at your desk just isn’t easy. It’s OK, though. Subscribe to our daily MLB newsletter and let us do the heavy lifting for you each morning to find the things you need to see.

This should effectively mark the beginning of teams starting to go after Ohtani and things should start to heat up on that front. Once again, this is only the beginning. As far as we know, no team has made a formal offer just yet, which means that we’ve still got a long way to go before we see teams start to seriously link themselves to the star prospect from Japan.

In other news, the trade rumors surrounding Giancarlo Stanton have been as thin as a leaf of spinach. There have reportedly been formal offers put on the table for last season’s leader in home runs, but the news has been slow to come on that front as well. The two biggest stories of this offseason have been dragging on at a snail’s pace and even smaller stories when it comes to rumors have been few and far in between.

Maybe the Hot Stove will heat up as the temperatures outside continue to drop, but for now, the stove is anything but lit and all we have now is the wistful memories of seasons past and painful notion of actually having to be patient for baseball rumors.

  • While a trade for Giancarlo Stanton has yet to materialize, this has given Devan Fink of Beyond the Box Score enough time to come up with a guide as to how teams can trade for Miami’s crown jewel.
  • Jerry Dipoto told Greg Johns of MLB.com that the Mariners have “spent most of this past year” planning on signing Shohei Ohtani.
  • There are rumors that the Nationals are showing interest in Jordan Zimmermann, but the crew at Bless You Boys is skeptical.
  • Speaking of the Nationals, it’s evident that there are changes and challenges on the way for Washington in the upcoming season.
  • Viva El Birdos took a look at Matt Carpenter and came to the following question: Are the Cardinals asking too much of their infielder?
  • Masato Tanaka could end up being one of the cornerstones in the Yankees’ rotation, which was once seen as an extremely unlikely scenario in the eyes of the writers over at Pinstripe Alley.
