The Colorado Avalanche, Ottawa Senators, and Nashville Predators recently discussed a three-way trade headlined by star forwards Matt Duchene and Kyle Turris, reports Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. The deal couldn’t come together and talks have ended for the time being, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger.

The proposal would’ve sent Duchene to Ottawa, Turris to Nashville, and a package of picks and prospects to Colorado, per Friedman. The Predators have a pair of high-level defenseman prospects in Samuel Girard and Dante Fabbro, so it would make sense if Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic was pursuing them.

Duchene has been one of the top names on the NHL trade market over the past year. His name came up in rumors regularly over the summer, and it was a surprise when the Avalanche opened the 2017-18 season with him on their roster. The team has gotten off to a solid 7-5-0 start, but that reportedly hasn’t stopped Duchene from pushing for new scenery.

The Senators are a team in need of speed at the top of their roster, so Duchene is a sensible target. Giving up Turris means it would be shuffling pieces more than adding a major piece, but Duchene is also under contract for an extra year, so Ottawa likely would’ve been forced to offer more than just Turris.

The deal has reportedly fallen through for now, but these reports signal that the Avs are still pushing on a Duchene trade and the Senators could be one of the prime suitors to make it happen. Dreger reported that Ottawa has been “pursuing Duchene since mid-September and discussions heated up in last couple of weeks.” It’s also possible that the Predators try to go after Duchene themselves if they’re not getting Turris as part of the potential trade.

Despite the turmoil, Duchene is off to a solid start with three goals and five assists in 12 games with the Avalanche this season. His future in the NHL may be destined to continue elsewhere, but Sakic remains patient in finding the best return possible.
