The Boston Bruins have reassigned struggling forward Matt Beleskey to their AHL affiliate after he cleared waivers Friday. The move comes 24 hours after the team made him available by placing him on waivers.

Being assigned to the Providence Bruins is the latest indication of how far Beleskey has fallen since signing a five-year, $19 million contract with Boston in 2015. He’s gone from one of the top unrestricted free agents on the market to the AHL in less than three years.

Beleskey was never likely to be claimed given his poor performance and a contract that includes a $3.8 million cap hit through 2019-20. He failed to record a point in 14 games with the Bruins this season and has put up just eight points in 63 games since the start of the 2016-17 season.

The Bruins seemed to be getting what they paid for in Beleskey’s first year, which included 37 points in 80 games. But he had been one of their least productive players for over a year now, and it’s impossible not to notice this fun fact for this season:

Bruins’ record when Beleskey plays: 4-8-2
Bruins’ record when Beleskey doesn’t play: 11-1-2

So Boston has given up on Beleskey for now, even though his reassignment does not get team entirely out of his contract. The Bruins can bury only $1.025 million, so there will be $2.775 million in dead cap space on their books.
