Julio Jones ruled short of the end zone vs. Saints on controversial call

It’s been a long day for the Falcons.

Jeanna Kelley
Jeanna Kelley has been covering the Falcons for The Falcoholic since 2011 and the NFL for SB Nation since 2015.

Things just aren’t going the Falcons’ way against the Saints. They’ve been on the wrong end of penalties, non-calls, and weird plays. And then they got shut down at the goal line even though it looked like Julio Jones might have scored a touchdown.

Officials called this Matt Ryan pass to Julio Jones down at the 1-yard line. Looking at it straight on, it looks like the ball doesn’t quite get to where it needs to be, which put the Falcons on the Saints 1-yard line for fourth down.

But from a side angle, it looks like Jones broke the plane for a score.

The Falcons challenged the play. Replay officials upheld the ruling on the field. It is hard to tell exactly when Jones gets control of the ball, which makes this one harder to officiate.

Atlanta went for it on fourth down, but the Saints’ defense stuffed Devonta Freeman short of the goal.

The Falcons set the tone with a butt interception and a butt fumble. Their bad luck against the Saints continues.
