The NBA is not ‘sticking to sports’

On this week’s Drive & Kick podcast, we discuss what’s happening outside the NBA, how the NBA is responding, and how we should respond.

On this week’s Drive & Kick podcast we decided to not stick to sports, because all we’ve been thinking about over the last week has been not sports. The NBA, which is decidedly sports, has also been not sticking to sports this past week as it has in most other weeks when someone asks about not sports.

So, let’s dive in. If this isn’t you cup of tea then feel free to move right along, but we feel like it’s a worthwhile discussion.

Among the topics we discussed:

  • Gonz’s road trip from L.A. to Houston (shoutout to Zac Crain and Eric Celeste) afforded him the opportunity to talk to lots of people and we think talking is important.
  • Why are NBA players and coaches more comfortable than other sports leagues in talking about social issues? We have a few theories.
  • Gonz wonders if there will be a fallout for the league. Flanns thinks it’s more of an opportunity to carve out a niche in our very crowded realm of diversions.
  • Speaking of diversions, do sports offer the same escape as they did a few weeks ago?
  • The media’s role in all this is interesting. On the one hand people are raising their social media voices loudly, and on the other tweets are just tweets. How will our coverage change, if at all?
  • And Gonz managed to slip the Sixers into the conversation because that’s what he does.
