The Mavericks are the big NBA trade deadline winners

They stole Nerlens Noel from Philly. Meanwhile, let’s laugh at the Wizards and Bulls and have the same old Celtics discussion.

Well, that was fun. The NBA trade deadline has come and gone, and while it didn’t yield the huge mega-deals that we wanted, it did give us plenty of fodder to hash out on the Drive & Kick podcast.

The big deal of the day, relatively speaking, was the Sixers sending Nerlens Noel to Dallas for Justin Anderson and Andrew Bogut with a “first-round pick” attached. (That pick is top-18 protected and will likely turn into a pair of seconds.)

Here’s a surprise: The Philly portion of this podcast isn’t happy about the deal. Anderson might be good, but the draft return for Noel is meh and he obviously isn’t named ‘Jahlil Okafor.’ For the Mavs, it’s no-brainer. Noel is a classic Rick Carlisle big man and now they have a couple of 20-something forwards to build around. Well done, Mavs!

Also on the pod:

  • The Celtics did nothing, which is fine. It can be argued that it wasn’t fine, but there really isn’t a right answer here. Same as it ever was.
  • Masai Ujiri: Trade deadline Ninja or warlock? Discuss.
  • The Wizards made the Wizards trade that the Wizards always make.
  • Magic Johnson made his first deal and it wasn’t terrible. Plus more on the Buss family coup. Gonz makes a Kennedy analogy.
  • Lou Williams will help the Rockets. Someone had to say it.
  • Incredulous pflanns alert: He’s incredulousing all over the Bulls.
  • And then we piled on the Kings for the Boogie trade.
