In a matter of minutes, St. Bonaventure went from celebrating a victory that Bonnies fans would never forget, to trying to process a defeat that anyone who follows college basketball will never forget.
St. Bonaventure storms court after apparent game-winner, gets technical, loses in overtime
The most brutal defeat of 2016-17 just happened.


Trailing Atlantic 10-leading VCU by two points with 3.2 seconds to play, St. Bonaventure’s Matt Mobley hit a tough three-pointer that appeared to give the Bonnies a dramatic victory. Despite the clock showing that there were 0.4 seconds still left to play, the St. Bonaventure bench players and fans mobbed the court.

The officials assessed St. Bonaventure a technical foul for the players leaving the bench and the students coming onto the court. The result was one foul shot for VCU’s JeQuan Lewis, who calmly sank it to send the game into overtime.
VCU outscored the stunned Bonnies by six in the extra frame, securing a huge 83-77 victory that allowed it to keep pace with Dayton at the top of the A-10. The loss dropped St. Bonaventure to 14-8 overall and 6-4 in league play.
