The New Orleans Privateers were picked to finish ninth in the Southland Conference before the start of the season. They wound up going on a magical run to win their league’s tournament and earn a trip to the NCAA tournament.

Sometimes the pressure of March Madness just gets to be a little too much.


The next step for Mark Slessinger’s team was to play in front of a national television audience against Mount St. Mary’s in the First Four from Dayton Tuesday night. Locked in a tight game in the second half, perhaps the pressure finally started to get through to the players.
That’s senior guard Christavious Gill and junior forward Travin Thibodeaux who ultimately had to be separated by players and coaches after getting into a shoving match coming off the court. After the timeout, Thibodeaux remained on the bench while Gill re-entered the game.
New Orleans, which entered the game with a 20-11 overall record, is one of the better stories in the tournament. The program briefly reclassified to Division-III after its struggles following Hurricane Katrina, but ultimately made the move back to D-I.
