Josh McCown could potentially be a starter in 2017, as he signs with Jets

Quarterback Josh McCown has finally selected a team.

After mulling over the decision, McCown has joined the New York Jets on a one-year contract, his agent announced on Monday evening. Ian Rapoport says the deal is worth $6 million.

McCown, one of the better backup quarterbacks in the league, sparked significant interest from several teams early in the offseason. He’ll be 38 by the start of next season, but the 14-year veteran is still reliable when healthy.

In his two most recent years with the Browns, McCown passed for 3,209 yards and 18 touchdowns with 10 interceptions in 13 total games (11 starts). It’s worth noting the quarterback did so behind one of the NFL’s worst offensive lines and with limited weapons at the receiver position.

In his most recent experience in favorable circumstances (2013), the veteran passed for 1,829 yards and 13 touchdowns with just one interception. He did so in relief of Jay Cutler and helped the Bears go 8-8, a record the team hasn’t been able to match since.

The Jets were going to look different at quarterback in 2017 regardless of McCown signing there or not. The team moved on from Geno Smith, and were left with the rather inexperienced Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg. Now, McCown has a chance to be a starter next season, pending any other moves the team makes at the position.
