NEW ORLEANS — Lawrence Keys III is a blur streaking across the field. But off the field, the four-star receiver prospect from McDonough 35 High School is taking things slow, especially with his recruiting.
Speedy recruit Lawrence Keys III has a great relationship with Texas Tech
New Orleans ties could help Texas Tech with the 40-offer prospect.
SB Nation caught up with Keys at the recent Nike Opening Regional Camp. Keys said that he measured in at a generous 5’11, 160 pounds, and that he is now up to 40 offers. His most recent ones are from Alabama, Georgia, and Notre Dame. He already claims an offer from the in-state LSU Tigers, and he recently took visits to Texas and LSU.
Despite all the offers, Keys is in no hurry to make a decision any time soon. And he is definitely not interested in an early National Signing Day, which the NCAA is voting on this coming April.
“I’ll be signing on National Signing Day,” Keys said. “It’s a business. Things change, coaches leave.”
Relationships are very important to Keys. And three schools stand out with good relationships early on in the process.
“Houston, Texas Tech, Nebraska,” Keys said. “I’m closest with coach [Jabbar] Juluke. He’s from down here. We’ve had that connection since he was at LSU.”
That would be Texas Tech’s Jabbar Juluke, who was a high school coach at nearby Edna Karr for a decade before coaching at Louisiana Tech and LSU. He is now an associate head coach and running backs coach in Lubbock with Kliff KIngsbury’s staff.
As far as the hometown Tigers, Keys says that he would fit in the motion slot role under new offense under coordinator Matt Canada. He will be watching to see how LSU’s offense evolves this season.
The next step in Keys’ recruitment will be to take more visits, and to cut down his list from more than 40 offers to 10. And he says he knows two schools that are locks to make it in.
“Soon I’ll be dropping my top 10,“ Keys said. “Houston and Texas Tech will be in.”
