South Carolina basketball could win both NCAA tournaments this year

Both the men and women’s teams are in the Final Four.

Congratulations to the Gamecocks!

Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams have made it to the Final Fours of the respective NCAA tournaments. South Carolina has a chance to be the second team in history to win both championships in the same year.

Can you guess the other?

* * *

That’s right! UConn! The Huskies have actually done it twice, first in 2004 then again in 2014.

In 2004, the Connecticut men’s team lost just six times in the regular season. The women only lost four games. In 2014, the Shabazz Napier-led men lost eight times and the Breanna Stewart-led women only once. Still, in each of those years, both Huskies squads were national champions.

This is the 13th time both teams from the same school have made it to their respective Final Fours, the most recent being Syracuse last year.

Of course, in order to actually accomplish the elusive double win, the women’s team will have to beat UConn. If you didn’t know, the UConn women have won 111 games in a row. They’ve been to the Final Four 10 years straight. They brought home titles six of those years.

USC women went to the Final Four for the first time in 2015.

The men will have to defeat Gonzaga, then either Oregon or North Carolina. To be fair, they’ve pulled off three upsets this tournament to get here, beating Baylor, Duke, and Florida. This is also their very first time in the Final Four.

This could be South Carolina’s year, though! It has been so far. It would be extremely awesome to see both tournament winners from one school.
