Randy Moss signing with a soccer team is probably an April Fools’ joke

Randy Moss signed with the USL’s Charlotte Independence, but it sure looks like a prank.

The United Soccer League’s Charlotte Independence made a odd, but exciting announcement Friday morning that it had signed former NFL wide receiver Randy Moss to be a goalie for the team.

“Renewing my career is something that I’ve thought about for a long time now,” Moss said in a statement on the team’s website. “I’m excited to get started with the Charlotte Independence and show the world that I can be a two-sport athlete.”

Uh huh ... sure.

It’s not that Moss couldn’t do it. Even at 40 years old, he’s one of the greatest athletes in NFL history, so I wouldn’t rule out his chances at being able to pull it off. But does this make any sense?

Moss just finished his first season as an analyst on ESPN, serving on the panel of Sunday NFL Countdown and Monday Night Countdown. He was pretty good at it, too, and entertained with casual displays of ridiculous athleticism like catching a large salmon in Seattle one-handed or nailing a field goal in dress shoes.

He seemed pretty content with the job so why pursue a career with the Independence at age 40? He even says in a video posted on the team’s site “I don’t know too much about y’all’s sport.”

The Independence’s season opener set for Saturday, April 1 against the Charleston Battery. Even if Moss is able to make a transition to a sport he doesn’t know well, the team would want him to take more than one day to get ready for the role, right?

This has April Fools’ Day prank written all over it, and I, for one, am interested to see what they have up their sleeves for Saturday.
