Savannah State might return to Division II, which would be for the best

The Tigers have strapped finances and little success on the field to show for their FCS jump.

Unless you’re a Savannah State fan or root for a team on SSU’s schedule, the last time you really thought about the Tigers was probably when they were being beaten by Florida State so badly in 2012, the game just ended.

Now the Savannah Morning News reports the Tigers are considering a move in 2019 from Division I FCS down to Division II, which would save money, lighten competition, and mean the end of humiliating paycheck games against FBS national title contenders. It’s happening “unless a ‘substantial influx of money’ comes to the program,” that is, reports HBCU Gameday.

The Tigers have won four conference titles in 101 football seasons, but 10 years after a 1992 Division II playoff bid, they jumped to I-AA/FCS. They’ve averaged 1.5 wins in the years since. It’s perpetually the country’s most daunting rebuild. (Other SSU sports have had some more highlights, such as the baseball program and the greatly improved men’s basketball program.)

Most historically black colleges have faced resource disadvantages for decades, and though movements like the Celebration Bowl and Grambling State’s renewal are restoring hope on the field, Division I is a high bar for plenty of smaller schools of all kinds.
