Eat like the French, drink like the British, and play basketball like C.J. McCollum, because he’s unbelievably good at this sport. The Portland Trail Blazers’ costar rattled off 27 points in the first half in a blistering performance, keeping Portland with the Golden State Warriors step for step in the two team’s first 24 minutes of postseason play and leaving the game tied at 56 at halftime.
C.J. McCollum scored at will against the NBA’s best defense
McCollum and Damian Lillard lit up Golden State, even in defeat.
He then followed it up with 14 more in the second half. Though the Warriors shut he and Damian Lillard down in the fourth quarter to win, 121-109, the Blazers’ dynamic duo announced that they’ll be a threat in this series. The two combined for 75 of Portland’s 109 points.
It’s so strange to remember where McCollum was just two seasons ago: averaging less than seven points and 16 minutes for Portland as a backup two-guard. Last year, he broke out, and this season, McCollum played even better for Portland, which surged during the second half of the season to secure a playoff berth. Sure, it comes against the Warriors, overwhelming favorites to win the whole damn thing this year. But don’t tell McCollum that.
In Game 1, it didn’t come at the expense of Damian Lillard, who had 34 points himself. The 48 from them was the most Lillard and McCollum have combined for in a half, but it’s a perfect example of their dynamism that is nearly impossible to guard. McCollum himself isn’t the quickest or more athletic guard, and his 6’4 frame doesn’t stand out from the crowd. But quirky shots that catch defenders out of rhythm do.
He’s masterful at finding a bit of space where he can work.
It really doesn’t need to be much.
McCollum was sensational and Lillard backed him up. It’s exceptionally hard to outscore Golden State, but these two at their best nearly matched them shot for shot. Even if it’s in vain, it’s fun to watch them try.
