The Yankees slugged their way to an amazing comeback win
Saturday’s Say Hey, Baseball looks at how the Yankees managed to make a 9-1 deficit disappear. Plus, Madison Bumgarner will be out for longer than expected.

As a franchise, the New York Yankees have been there, done that, bought the T-shirt, and have a stack of pennants and trophies to show for it. So it’s hard for this club to pull something off that gives their fan base an unforgettable thrill, and yet this year’s team managed to do it with a magical moment in the first month of the season.
After the Yankees put down the Red Sox on the strength of a Maddux from Masahiro Tanaka on Thursday night, they welcomed the Orioles into Yankee Stadium for what figured to be a hotly contested weekend series between two divisional rivals. However, the Orioles appeared to be more than ready to take the game to the Yankees as they got out to a 9-1 lead after the top of the sixth inning was done. This included a massive dinger from Manny Machado and a grand slam from Mark Trumbo that seemed like the exclamation point for the end of a statement win for Baltimore.
If the game was supposed to be over with the score being 11-4 after the top of the seventh, nobody told the Yankees. Instead, the Bronx Bombers just kept on dropping bombs. Jacoby Ellsbury picked a great time to hit the first grand slam of his career, but all that did was bring the Yankees within three runs. However, an RBI single from Ellsbury combined with a two-run dinger from Starlin Castro improbably sent this game into extras. Then in the 10th inning, Matt Holliday sent Yankee Stadium into delirium with a walk-off three-run homer to complete an absolutely insane comeback.
The Evil Empire may not be back in full force just yet, but it’s been a long time since the Yankees have been as fun to observe as they are right now. Again, it may be hard to get some Yankees fans excited about pre-October events, but this team is trying its hardest to change things in that regard.
- Aaron Judge has a frightening amount of power in his bat, and he put it on display when he hit this monster dinger back when the Yankees were down 9-2. This thing had an exit velocity of 119.4 mph!
- The Mets have gotten off to a bad start and seem to be snakebitten in multiple ways right now. Grant Brisbee wrote about some of the major issues that are ailing the Metropolitans at the moment.
- The latest prognosis for Madison Bumgarner following his dirt bike accident has him returning after the All-Star break. That’s a long time to spend on the shelf.
- Meanwhile, Adam Eaton had to be carried off the field during the Nationals loss to the Mets on Friday night. Dusty Baker isn’t optimistic.
- Dansby Swanson is off to a slow start, and the crew at Talking Chop tried to figure out exactly what’s wrong with the rookie shortstop.
- Speaking of slow starts, the Blue Jays really need to put the pedal to the metal if they want to make the postseason. In fact, they’ll need to play like they did back in 1993.
- Don’t talk to Royals fans about the early ‘90s, though. As bad as things are right now, it’s not nearly as bad as it was back then.
- There may come a time when Buster Posey will move to a position other than catcher, but McCovey Chronicles says that the time is not now.
