The new Pistons logo is basically their old Bad Boys logo, and it’s great

Detroit’s going back to the look that won back-to-back championships in 1989-90.

The Detroit Pistons unveiled a new logo on Tuesday, ending a 12-year reign of the previous design that was put in place in 2005.

Here’s a blown-up look at the new design:

That looks a lot like their throwback logo from the 1980s and mid-90s:

The Pistons wanted the new logo to honor their longstanding history in the community. The retro look does just that.

“As our organization begins a new chapter in downtown Detroit, this new logo links the franchise’s rich championship lineage with our exciting prospects for the future,” the Pistons announced in a statement.

The team unveiled the new logo to the public via speed painting at a fan event.

This switch may not be a bad thing. After all, it was the championship “Bad Boy” Pistons who last rocked the retro logo in the ’80s and ’90s. That team was led by Isaiah Thomas and Joe Dumars, who won back-to-back NBA titles in 1989 and 1990.

After placing eighth in the Eastern Conference last season, Detroit took a step back and failed to make the playoffs this year. Maybe a blast from the past is what’s needed to steer the ship in the right direction.
