P.K. Subban-Evgeni Malkin fight reminds us the Stanley Cup Final doesn’t need them

It was less a fight and more of an aggressive hug.

We don’t see fights in the Stanley Cup Final very often. The NHL doesn’t exactly want them on the biggest stage, and teams don’t want to risk losing players for chunks of key games as a result of the consequences. So surely it would be something to see P.K. Subban and Evgeni Malkin, two of the game’s best, drop gloves in a Stanley Cup matchup, right?

Not exactly. This “fight” was more like a very weird, very aggressive hug that lasted way too long.

The Penguins led 4-1 over the Predators at the time in Game 2, so there wasn’t a ton to lose for either side by going at it. The referees surprisingly let it happen, but it seems clear that neither Subban nor Malkin was really interested in trying to blow up the other one.

Malkin said as much after the game:

So now we’ve seen what a fight in a Stanley Cup Final between two of the game’s biggest superstars looks like in 2017. I guess now we have another reason why there shouldn’t be fights in big games because this wasn’t exactly thrilling.
