Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Jameson Taillon underwent surgery for “suspected testicular cancer” on Monday, the team announced.

Taillon had been placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday retroactive to Thursday upon notifying medical staff of discomfort in his groin area. After consulting with doctors over the weekend, Dr. John C. Lyne performed a procedure at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh on Monday.
According to the Pirates’ press release, the recommended treatment is pending further testing.

However, as a naive little guy, I never realized that each person has a different path and journey along their way to accomplishing their goals. Tommy John Surgery, Sports Hernia Surgery, a 105 mph line drive off of my hard head, and this most recent discovery are just a few of the stops along the way.
They have all just added fuel to my burning fire, and inspired me to become even better. I vowed to use every setback as an opportunity for growth. Today I lost a piece of my “manhood.” But, today I’m feeling like more of a man than I ever have. My journey hasn’t been the smoothest. But it is my journey, and I wouldn’t change it for anything. Thank you to my family, girlfriend, teammates, doctors, Pirates fans, and the entire Pirates organization for the support.
Taillon, 25, got off to a strong start to the 2017 season with a 3.31 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 35.1 innings over six starts. He made his MLB debut in 2016 after being drafted out of high school with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 draft. He gives the Pirates a strong one-two punch with Gerrit Cole atop the rotation.
Earlier this year, Rockies pitcher Chad Bettis announced he would undergo chemotherapy for testicular cancer that returned after an offseason procedure. Colorado placed Bettis on the 60-day disabled list in late March, and he has not pitched this season.
Health will be the primary concern for Taillon at this point, so his status for returning to the mound is uncertain. The Pirates say they will provide “updates as it relates to Taillon’s return to playing status as appropriate.”
