Smith deleted the post, but the internet is forever.
Smith later tweeted that he was indeed not leaving the Cavaliers:
The initial reaction to the Facebook post would be that Smith is leaving the Cavaliers, obviously. But the only likely scenario in which Smith would be out of Cleveland is via trade.
He signed a four-year, $57 million deal with the Cavaliers in October of 2016. That means he still has three years left on that deal, with over $44 million left.
The Cavaliers have been involved in rumors surrounding Paul George and Jimmy Butler since the Warriors handled them in five games during the NBA Finals. It’s unlikely that Smith just tipped off a trade in which he was involved in, but the way the NBA offseason goes, you can’t count anything out.
Though it’s hard to imagine the Cavaliers would have made any moves just yet. They parted ways with GM David Griffin on Monday, and have yet to hire his replacement — though it’s believed Chauncey Billups will eventually be hired in said position.
This isn’t the first time one of Smith’s social media posts have raised eyebrows in the past two weeks. After falling down 3-0 to the Warriors in the Finals, he tweeted out, “Cavs in 7” — a tweet which he also denied sending.
Smith has been known to have one of the more happy triggers in the NBA when it comes to pulling shots.
Clearly he’s got a similar approach in his social media use, whereas Kevin Durant is a little more evergreen.
