Predators take Game 4 lead on goal that referees didn’t notice at first

A random horn blew to stop play and initiate a review.

The Nashville Predators took the lead in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final after a wild sequence that saw a goal scored by little more than an inch. Frederick Gaudreau beat Matt Murray with a low shot that the goalie appeared to stop at first, but replays showed the puck actually crossed the goal line.

Play continued after the goal until a horn sounded to initiate a review, for good reason. It was a good goal:

This wrapped up a thrilling 10 seconds where Pittsburgh could’ve taken the lead, but instead found itself trailing.

The wildness began when Chris Kunitz got a big breakaway on Pekka Rinne, who had already given up a breakaway goal to Sidney Crosby in the first period. Rinne was on point this time, however, stonewalling Kunitz in the crease to keep it tied.

Seconds later, the Predators got a counterattacking rush into the Penguins’ zone, and Gaudreau got the wraparound opportunity. Murray tried to get post to post to take away the shot, but the puck was already past the goal line before he could swat it away.

If Nashville can win Game 4, this series is all tied up. We’ll remember plays like this one if it happens.
