Mayweather vs. McGregor: Association of Ringside Physicians opposes reducing glove size to 8 ounces

Worried about safety, the Association of Ringside Physicians supports 10 ounce gloves rather than 8 ounce

After Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor agreed to fight in 8 ounce gloves rather than the standard 10 ounces in their Aug. 26 bout, the Association of Ringside Physicians (ARP) asked the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) to deny the glove change.

The NSAC has to vote on whether the fighters can reduce the size of their gloves. However, the ARP urged the NSAC not to vote in favor of the change in an official release.

The Association of Ringside Physicians understands that consideration is being given to amend current regulations, and in so doing, permit the use of 8oz Gloves in the forthcoming boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor. This is a bout that has already been set a specific weight class. Unless there is scientific evidence to support the view that such a change might improve the safety of this bout, we would strongly caution against allowing current regulation to be over-ruled. To do so would also set a precent for future bouts.

Mayweather proposed to McGregor that they should fight in 8 ounce gloves instead of 10 ounces on his Instagram page, according to Holland.

“I’ll be wearing 8oz. Grant gloves. McGregor can fight in any brand he prefers or chooses. Whatever advantage McGregor needs to feel more comfortable in the ring, I’m willing to accommodate,” Mayweather, 49-0, posted.

McGregor, 29, agreed moments later, telling Mayweather, 40, to pick whatever size gloves he wants. “I fight with 4oz. I don’t give a fuck about the size of the glove. I am coming sprinting at you with bricks. Know that. Brittle hands.”

The UFC lightweight champion also said that he doesn’t care about fighting with lighter gloves because he uses 4ounce gloves in the UFC. “If we’re wearing eight-ounce gloves, I’m struggling to see how he lasts two rounds, and that’s the God’s honest truth.”

Mayweather told the Boxing Scene that McGregor was complaining about the glove sizes. “So I said, ‘Listen, let’s do eight ounces. I want to do anything so that you feel that you have an advantage. I want to make sure you’re comfortable coming to the fight world,” Mayweather said.
