Richard Jefferson joked about how much Deron Williams disliked Cleveland

But there’s always some truth in rumors.

The Road Trippin’ podcast with Richard Jefferson and Channing Frye is a gift that keeps on giving. It’s unusually and legitimately candid, which is an increasingly difficult thing to get from professional athletes these days. It helps that the two are orating from platforms they’ve chosen, but they also choose to be honest.

And also roast former teammates like Deron Williams. Here’s a transcript of a segment on their latest podcast episode with ESPN reporter Dave McMenamin and Chris Geeter.

Richard Jefferson: “When you ask Deron about golf, his eyes light up. When you ask Deron about MMA, his eyes light up.”

Dave McMenamin: “—what about when you talk to him about coming off the bench for the Cavaliers?”

Jefferson: “His eyes did not light up, his eyes did not light up.”

Chris Geeter: “What about when the Warriors saw him coming off the bench?”

[laughter]

Jefferson: “Their eyes lit up”

Let’s make sure we add proper context to this, because leaving it out is why so many athletes are nervous about being this candid. Deron Williams came on the Road Trippin’ podcast a few episodes before this, and it’s clear that he’s friends with Jefferson. Here’s that episode.

The entire exchange between Jefferson, McNemanin, and Geeter in the most recent episode was lighthearted and certainly not a mean-spirited shot at the still-unsigned free agent point guard.

Cleveland has replaced Williams with Derrick Rose, which might not make as much sense basketball-wise. But this sheds light on Williams perhaps not having as great of a time with the Cavaliers as we otherwise might have imagined.
