SummerSlam 2017 results: AJ Styles had a phenomenal finish against Kevin Owens

AJ Styles fought hard to retain his championship against Owens.

AJ Styles and Kevin Owens locked horns for the United States Championship in the Barclays Center. They traded lethal blows and applied a variety of maneuvers on one another, but it was Styles who came out victorious.

Styles and Owens went right after each other after Styles’ theme music ended. After the bell rang, both competitors took the fight outside of the ring. SmackDown commissioner Shane McMahon, who served as the special guest referee, had to restore order many times in this match.

The Phenomenal One and The Prizefighter didn’t back down from one another. You could literally hear the blows there were throwing at one another. Owens took control of the match after landing a vicious clothesline that nearly flipped Styles inside out.

Owens performed a Cannonball on Styles in the corner of the ring and quickly went for a pin. Styles kicked out and kept competing, but The Prizefighter kept slowing down the pace of the match. Owens used his size and strength advantage over Styles to isolate him.

After Styles kept throwing vicious blows, Styles slowed down his momentum by throwing some back. Owens tried to attempt a pop-up powerbomb, but Styles avoided the maneuver and generated some offense of his own.

But Owens, again, slowed Styles down. This time, though, he pushed McMahon into the ropes, which caused Styles to lose his balance and hit his groin on the top turn buckle. Styles recovered and tried to hit Owens with a 450 splash, but Owens McMahon in the way.

Later on, Owens hit Styles with a pop-up powerbom, but the Phenomenal One kicked out. And Owens got in McMahon’s face because he thought it was a three-count. Styles regained control by putting Owens in the Calf Crusher. Owens tapped out, but McMahon didn’t see it because he was outside of the ring in pain. Owens got back into the matchup when he ferociously slammed Styles onto the canvas off the top turnbuckle.

Moreover, Styles hit Owens with the Styles Clash, but Owens surprisingly kicked out. Then, Owens hit Styles with another pop-up powerbomb, and McMahon counted to three. But Styles’ leg was on the rope, and McMahon took back the pinfall, saying it was a two-count.

Owens was furious and got in McMahon’s face again. Styles came out victorious after hitting another Styles Clash. The Phenomenal One is still your United States Champion, but he came close to losing the match plenty of times. But for now, he can walk out of the Barclays Center with a smile on his face.
