Ex-boxing champ Wayne McCullough believes Conor McGregor has a chance to beat Floyd Mayweather
“Anything can happen on that night,” McCullough says.

Most boxing fans believe Conor McGregor has no chance to conquer the undefeated Floyd Mayweather in their Aug. 26 mega-fight. But Wayne McCullough isn’t one of those fans. McCullough, a former WBC bantamweight titleholder with a 27-7 record, thinks McGregor, 29, has a chance against Mayweather, who is 40 years old.
Indeed, there is a huge age difference between both competitors, and McCullough is aware of that. But he believes “Conor has a great chance [to win]. If Floyd gets old, good night for him.
“Conor has that unorthodox style. He can’t throw one punch at a time because Floyd will just pick him off. Everybody says he has a puncher’s chance, but Floyd fought Shane Mosley and Canelo Álvarez, guys who are big punchers. And they did hurt him momentarily, but then he recovered and won the fight,” McCullough said.
This isn’t a conventional fight where you would see two boxers go head to head for 12 rounds. McGregor is the current UFC Lightweight champion, and Mayweather, 49-0, is stepping out of retirement to step back into the squared circle against McGregor.
Indeed, many are labeling this fight as a showdown of Boxing vs. MMA. But McCullough doesn’t think so. He knows that both sports are different, and he tipped his hat to McGregor for forcing Mayweather out of retirement to compete in this fight.
“[Mayweather] is known as the best defensive fighter of all time, and anything can happen on that night. Conor has a shot,” McCullough said.
Fans know that this fight will generate a lot of money, which means McGregor and Mayweather will receive lucrative checks when this bout is over.
“Money talks. Conor is going to get a big pay day, the UFC is going to get a pay day, and Floyd is going to promote this fight around the world,” McCullough said.
