Fans burned Isaiah Thomas jerseys after he was traded. This trend needs to stop

Since LeBron’s Decision in 2010, a trend motivated by virality has grown, and it’s stupid.

The NBA was its best self on Tuesday and gave us a blockbuster trade that sent Kyrie Irving to the Celtics in exchange for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, and Brooklyn’s first-round pick in 2018.

Videos surfaced of Thomas’ jersey being engulfed in flames after he was traded for Irving — who is the one who reportedly requested a trade.

There’s no good reason to burn Thomas’ jersey. The Celtics’ front office made a move that they felt was going to make their team better — not at the request of Thomas.

If anything, Celtics fans should do what this Cleveland fan did with Irving’s jersey:

LeBron James’ now infamous Decision in 2010 to leave Cleveland for Miami led Cavaliers fans to burn his jersey in the streets of Cleveland. I was in downtown Cleveland in 2010 when fans were burning those jerseys in the street, and let me tell you — it was genuine rage.

Since then, players like Dwight Howard, Dwyane Wade, Kevin Durant, Gordon Hayward, and others have seen their jerseys burned after changing teams. Though after James, it reached a point where people are just doing it to go viral, and that’s dumb.

If there’s one player’s jersey to be burned in this situation, it’s Irving’s. He’s the one who requested a trade, wanting to be the centerpiece for an NBA franchise. That was after he and James combined to go to three consecutive NBA Finals, winning one of those.

Even then, it’s very lame to burn a jersey you spent money on to get some likes and retweets. Be more creative than that if you are so desperately thirsty to go viral.
