Floyd Mayweather, Conor McGregor all business in final press conference

The final press conference before Saturday was much more reserved and business-like than the chaotic world tour of July.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor will meet Saturday for an unprecedented battle between the best boxer of his generation and the biggest star in mixed martial arts for a boxing match at T-Mobile Arena. But the final press conference was much more reserved and business-like than the chaotic meetings of July.

During a world tour last month that featured stops in Los Angeles, Toronto, Brooklyn and London, fans showed up in droves and fueled loud, energetic speeches from both fighters. The atmosphere was much different Wednesday inside the MGM Grand, which was open to media only.

The two spent the final press conference before their highly anticipated bout promising that they’re taking Saturday very seriously.

Both showed up in suits, neither shouted, and both spoke of the confidence they have in their respective training.

While it was a toned-down version of McGregor on Wednesday, he still had choice words for his opponent. He called Mayweather an “old man” and promised to “f**k this boy up” when they meet Saturday.

Mayweather, by contrast, played the role of responsible adult. He admonished McGregor after the presser for showing up late, but was complimentary of McGregor’s skills. However, he said that others like Canelo Alvarez and Manny Pacquiao carried power like McGregor and couldn’t get the job done.

The next time the two meet face-to-face will be at the weigh-in Friday. The event will be open for fans to attend and that will likely breed the contentious environment that made the world tour a must-watch — even if it went off the rails in its final two stops.

Without the energy of a crowd of fans at the press conference Wednesday, any kind of diatribe of insults likely would’ve fallen flat for either fighter. Instead, we saw a more reserved, ‘all business’ version of both.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman announced at the press conference that the winner of the fight Saturday will receive “The Money Belt,” an alligator skin belt featuring 3,360 diamonds, 600 sapphires, and 300 emeralds. So rest assured, this fight is still every bit as ridiculous and over-the-top as it was during the world tour in July.
